Dundee-Bradford girls basketball advances to regional
CANANDAIGUA--The Dundee-Bradford girls basketball team won a thrilling Section V Class C2 championship, Friday, March 1 to advance to state-level competition in the postseason. The BraveScots only have one loss this season to Bloomfield and will compete against them again to be the sole representative for Class C in the state bracket.
The game was played at Marcus Whitman high school, Tuesday, March 5 after press time for this edition.
The reach that game, the girls defeated Keshequa, 51-47, at Finger Lakes Community College last Friday to claim the C2 title. The back-and-forth game saw a tie of 11-11 to end the first, then Dundee-Bradford carried the lead of 24-20 at half, 37-35 to finish the third and a 51-47, final. Bruna Crespo led the offense with 17 points and sunk two free throws in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter to make it a two-possession game for Keshequa and sealed the title for the BraveScots. Crespo was named to the all-tournament team.
Kendall Parker scored 15 points, including the go-ahead basket in the fourth quarter that set up the free throws for the victory. She was named the Most Valuable Player and joined Crespo and Mikayla Schoffner on the all-tournament team.
Other players scoring in the game were Kailey Yeoman (seven points), Cheyanne Grandall (six), Schoffner (four) and Alissa Eaves (two).
The team made it to the finale for Class C2 with a win over Caledonia-Mumford, Monday, Feb. 26. The final score was 50-42.
Parker led with 19 points. Yeoman posted 11 and Crespo had 10. Schoffner added eight points and Addie Kendall recorded two.
The team's record is currently 22-1.
Watkins Glen girls fall in championship game
DRYDEN--The Watkins Glen girls basketball team played Moravia in the Class C title game for Section IV, Saturday, March 2 at Tompkins Cortland Community College. The Lake Hawks fell 50-42, in a game that was much closer than the final score. The teams were within two points of each other with two minutes left. However, late free throw shooting by Moravia distanced the Blue Devils from Watkins.
"The girls played hard and battled in today's game," said Head Coach Alicia Learn. "Towards the end Moravia hit some shots and we had a few turnovers that hurt us. However, I am very proud of every one of the girls. They play hard and leave it all out there. The crowd today was amazing and I would like to thank all for the amazing support this season."
Brianna Hatch scored 13 points with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Rachel Vickio added 11 points and recorded three steals.
Addie Coolican and Olivia King each scored nine points. Coolican had eight rebounds and King, nine.
The girls end the season with a 17-4 record.
To reach the final game, Watkins Glen beat Unatego, 44-32, Tuesday, Feb. 27.
Vickio led with 22 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Hatch added nine points with two blocks.
The Lake Hawks were the top seed in Class C.
