Watkins Glen
Girls Soccer
The Watkins Glen girls soccer team lost in overtime to Sauquoit Valley, 4-3, at Herkimer Community College, Saturday, Nov. 4.
Scoring for the Lake Hawks were Ava Kelly, Skye Honrath and Sasha Honrath. Olivia VanSkiver added one assist. Lilly Ameigh made 13 saves in the goal.
"It’s always hard to get this far, only to fall short in overtime, but I’m beyond proud of the girls and how hard they fought throughout the game," said Coach Scott Morse. "We struggled at times to find our rhythm today, and our play at times reflected that. We had stretches where we were flat and reacting to the ball, and stretches where we got aggressive and looked great transitioning from the defensive end to the offensive end. We talked all week about how both teams thrive in the counterattack, and that was evident today. We took that early lead, then kind of slowed down and found ourselves down, only to roar back and tie the game with seconds remaining. That comeback took tremendous heart and determination and I think our girls showed their resolve."
Morse added, "Lillian Ameigh, Maisie Robertson, Sasha Honrath and Brenna Pierce all made amazing contributions over the years. They leave a legacy in Watkins Glen winning the first IAC championship, and first Section IV championship in girls soccer history last year, while repeating those accomplishments this year."
