Penn Yan lacrosse teams advance to final four
NEW YORK STATE--The Penn Yan boys and girls lacrosse teams recorded wins Saturday, June 3, in the first round of play for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship. The Mustangs are now in the final four for Class D and will advance to semifinal games.
The boys played at St. John Fisher College against Section VI's East Aurora. The final score was 8-4. Braden Fingar scored three goals. Carter Earl contributed two goals and two assists. Caden Dixon also added two goals, while Tukker Fisher had one. Bryant VanHousen posted two assists. Will Thompson made nine saves in the goal.
The boys next game is Wednesday, June 7 at Tompkins Cortland Community College against Marcellus. Game time is 3 p.m.
The girls scored 12 points in the first half, Saturday, leading to a 17-3 final score against Eden. The game was played at Clarence high school. Bailey Cooper recorded six goals and two assists in the game. Maihue Miranda-Wiltberger added four goals. Corinne Barden posted two goals and two assists, while Taylor Mullins and Gianna Voigt each had one goal and three assists. Makenna Mullins, Lila Hansen and Miley Andersen all scored one goal. Hansen added two assists. In the cage, Marion Wheeler and Megan Wheeler each had two saves.
The girls semifinal game will be played at Cortland High School, Friday, June 9 at 11 a.m. They will face Bronxville from Section I.
Both the girls and boys Penn Yan varsity lacrosse teams captured sectional titles last week. The girls won 12-4 over Waterloo-Marcus Whitman, Tuesday, May 30 and the boys won 11-6 against Aquinas, Wednesday, May 31.
The Lady Mustangs led 5-3 at halftime and added seven goals in the second on the way to the 12-4 victory. Cooper scored four goals. Miranda-Wiltberger added three, while Ruby Berry scored two. Barden recorded one goal and one assist; other goals came from Voigt and Hansen. Mullins added two assists. Goalie Marion Wheeler posted five saves in the cage.
In the boys game, the team opened the scoring in the second quarter with three goals and then added four more in each of the third and fourth quarters to get to 11. Dixon led with three goals. Braden Fingar contributed two goals and two assists. VanHousen also posted two goals and one assist. Fisher added two goals and Earl had one also. Teagan Fingar helped the team with three assists and one goal. Anthony Druker also had an assist. In the goal, Thompson made 10 saves.
Track and field
Local track and field athletes competed at state qualifier events last week.
On Friday, members of the BraveScots track and field team competed in Batavia. Logan Buchanan will be attending states after hitting the super standard of 6' 4" in the high jump earlier this season.
Hayden Erick will also be attending after he jumped the state qualifying standard of 44' 4.25" in the triple jump while finishing second at the qualifier. Lily Hall made states after she won the state qualifier with a triple jump of 37' which is a new Dundee Central School record.
Other finishers for Dundee-Bradford were Kendall Parker (ninth-100 meter dash and ninth-high jump), Madison Hughes (11th-long jump), Hall (12th-long jump), Peyton Mullin (sixth-shot put), Camden Buchanan (10th-100 meter dash), Logan Buchanan (third-high jump and 12th-long jump) and Hayden Erick (ninth-long jump).
For Penn Yan, James Tette was first in the 3,200 meter run (9:40.73) and previously qualified for the steeplechase to advance to the state finale.
Other finishers at the qualifier were: Cynthia Kriegar (15th-shot put), Anthony Wheeler (fourth-800 meter run and seventh-1,600 meter run) and Anthony Sciallo (12th-shot put and 12th-discus).
Hammondsport's Emmy O'Neill was third in the 2,000 meter steeplechase.
Penn Yan baseball
The Penn Yan varsity baseball team fell to Pal-Mac, 5-3, Tuesday, May 30 to determine the representative for Class C in the state championship. Brady Emerson pitched for six and two-third innings with nine strikeouts.
At the plate, Liam Chapman and Reed Bouchard were both 2-for-4. Chapman had a triple and double. Mike Layton was 2-for-3.
Schuyler Storm plays at regional
The combined Watkins Glen and Odessa-Montour baseball team faced Little Falls at Mirabito Stadium in Binghamton for a state regional matchup, Saturday, June 3. The final score was 4-1, Little Falls. Runs were scored by the Mounties in the fourth, sixth (two) and seventh innings, while the Storm recorded its one run in the bottom of the seventh. Ben Heichel led off the inning with a single, Brad Gillis walked, before a sacrifice bunt moved up the runners. Brady Bockelkamp had an RBI single. The bases were loaded before a fly ball to the outfield by Daniel Lewis ended the game.
Track and field
The Section IV state qualifiers for track and field were held last week at Union-Endicott. Representing Odessa at states are Hannah Nolan and Victoria Brewster. The finishes included:
Nolan (first-pentathlon, 2644), Brewster (second-100 meter dash, second-200 meter dash and seventh-long jump), David Patterson (fifth-pentathlon), Benjamin Campbell (20th-3,200 meter run), Evelyn Zinger (21st-1,500 meter run), the boys 4x800 meter relay (15th), the girls 4x100 relay (15th) and the girls 4x800 relay (13th).
Watkins Glen saw finishes by four athletes. Rachel Vickio was fifth in the discus event. Natalee Oliver was 14th in the 800 meter, Kyren Young was 16th in the 200 meter and Johnny VanScoyk was 21st in the 1,600 meter run.
