SPORTS RECAP: Week of 11-2-22

Watkins Glen
Girls Soccer
The Watkins Glen girls soccer team captured the school's first-ever sectional title, Friday, Oct. 28 at Johnson City high school against Trumansburg. The team improves to 13-3-1 as they now move to regional competition.
In the game, Skye Honrath had two goals and one assist. Sasha Honrath added one goal. Goalkeeper Lilly Ameigh made three saves.
Coach Scott Morse explained, "I thought we came out aggressive and determined right out of the gate, and every player that entered the game for us maintained that energy. It was another total team effort marked by outstanding defense and an aggressive offense. Our ball movement created numerous scoring opportunities in both halves. I loved how well we transitioned from defense to offense, and then right back to defense. Our defensive line, led by Carly Arnold, was able to stifle opportunities by Trumansburg and got the ball out quickly on the counterattack. Skye and Sasha Honrath were able to connect, as they often do, to lead the scoring. It has been impressive watching Skye emerge as a premier scorer in the league. The girls had a nice regular season, but seeing this group come together like they have in the postseason has been incredible. Every member of this team contributes to the success, and I am beyond proud of them for winning the first girls sectional soccer championship in school history. They are a very talented team, but an even nicer group of people and I am tremendously lucky to have the opportunity to coach them. Now we have to get back to work as we play next weekend in the regional game. That will, undoubtedly, be a very difficult game so we have a lot of work to do."
The regional game will be played at Norwich high school against Sauquoit Valley. The game gets underway at 2 p.m.
The soccer team reached the final game with a win over Elmira Notre Dame, Tuesday, Oct. 25. The final score was 4-1. Goals were recorded by Skye Honrath (three) and Ava Kelly. Ameigh made 11 saves in goal.

Cross Country
Watkins Glen's Johnny VanScoyk was ninth at the IAC championships, Friday, Oct. 28. His time was 19:01.5. Isaac Hendrickson was 15th in 19:27.1 and Aidan Maphis was 17th with a 19:39.2.

Schuyler Storm
Football
The combined Watkins Glen and Odessa-Montour football team fell to Dryden, 18-0, Friday, Oct. 28.
Leading rushers in the game were Ryan Willett with eight carries for 42 yards and Bradley Gillis with nine carries for 29 yards.
Quarterback Daniel Lewis was 5-for-16 with 45 yards.
Catching passes for the Schuyler Storm were Thomas Snow (two for 28 yards), Willett (one of 16) and Alex Holmes (one for 11).
Willett recorded eight tackles, Gillis had seven and Gavin Lohmeyer, six.

Penn Yan-Dundee Football
The Penn Yan-Dundee football team advanced to the Section V Class C semifinal game after a win over Midlakes, Friday, Oct. 28. The semifinal game will be at home, Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
The victory over Midlakes, with a score of 40-7, was made possible by forcing six turnovers and capitalizing on scoring opportunities.
Quarterback Carter Earl was 8-for-13 through the air, with 113 yards and two touchdowns. He added five carries for 24 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Nick Slavick led the team with three receptions for 73 yards and two touchdowns, while also carrying the ball 10 times for 55 yards and an additional touchdown. Jaxson also had a huge 86-yard run for a touchdown.
On defense, Reed Bouchard led with nine tackles. Anthony Sciallo recorded eight tackles and a fumble recovery, while Mason Czymmek had six tackles, one fumble recovery and a blocked punt. Bryant Van Housen returned a fumble for a touchdown and Caden Dixon also made a fumble recovery. Wyatt Walters and Anthony Druker each made interceptions for the team. Eli Raplee added seven tackles.

Penn Yan-Dundee Cheerleading
The Penn Yan-Dundee cheerleading squad competed in the sectional competition, Saturday, Oct. 29 at Gates-Chili High School. The team participated in Class C and finished eighth overall with a score of 52.90.

Penn Yan
Boys Soccer
The Penn Yan boys soccer team competed in the sectional championship game, Saturday, Oct. 29. The Mustangs lost in overtime by a final score of 2-1, Bishop Kearney.
Kaden Steele scored for Penn Yan with an assist by David Reid.
The soccer team reached the final game with a win over North Rose-Wolcott, Wednesday, Oct. 26. The score was 1-0. Zackary Townley recorded a goal off an assist by Landon Berry. Thomas Bardon made eight saves.

Volleyball
The Penn Yan volleyball team lost in the sectional quarterfinals to Attica, Saturday, Oct. 29. The match went into five games with scores of 9-25, 25-21, 25-14, 4-25, 19-17. Individual stats were not available.

Dundee-Bradford
Volleyball
The Dundee-Bradford volleyball team fell to Lyons in five games, Saturday, Oct. 29. The scores were 18-25, 25-20, 25-17, 20-25, 11-15 in the sectional quarterfinal game.
The team defeated Wheatland-Chili in four games, Thursday, Oct. 27 to open the sectional tournament. Game scores were 25-18, 25-16, 25-28, 25-19. Lily Hall had 18 assists and two aces. Mikayla Schoffner added 10 aces and eight kills. McKenna Miller contributed five kills.

Hammondsport
Girls Soccer
The Hammondsport girls soccer team fell to Northstar Academy, 4-0, Wednesday, Oct. 26. The Section V Class D2 game was a semifinal against the top seed, who would go on to win the title.

Volleyball
The Hammondsport volleyball team lost to Fillmore in the sectional opener, Thursday, Oct. 27. Game scores were 6-25, 29-31, 15-25.

Cross Country
For cross country matches last week, there were the Wayne-Finger Lakes Championship at Williamson Town Park and the Steuben County Championship at Genesee Valley.
For Wayne-Finger Lakes, Penn Yan's James Tette was first in 16:07. Kyle and Anthony Wheeler were 21st and 22nd, respectively.
Madison Bishop was 87th for the Penn Yan girls.
In Steuben County, Hammondsport's Emmy O'Neill was third in 20:59.7. Blake Wright was 24th in the boys race with a 21:45.9..
