Dundee school meeting watch 11/13


Meeting: Dundee Central School District board of education met for one and a half hours on November 13. The meeting was followed by an executive session to discuss personnel and real estate matters.
Attendance: Board president Joseph Capurso was excused. Approximately 15 members of the public in the audience.
Action: Accepted donation of paperback dictionaries for third grade students from the Dundee Rotary Club
• Accepted the first reading of a revised policy on records management.
• The board discussed three proposals for senior citizen property tax exemption before voting for the one adopted by Yates County. The exemptions range from 50 percent for a maximum income of $11,650 to a five percent exemption for incomes between $19,151 and $20,050. Board member Irene Nowak abstained from voting.
• Approved changing the Teacher’s Conference Day from January 30, 2009 to February 2, 2009. The change was triggered by changes in the state.
• The board agreed to a modest change in agendas for the board of education meetings. Revisions to the agenda will be provided on a separate sheet rather than reprinting the entire agenda with revisions.
Later in the meeting, Superintendent of Schools Nancy Zimar spoke to the board about the possibility of paperless board meetings. She said they could begin with some business office reports. Zimar detailed the process, noting Wayne Central School District if using this method and said it took about a year to get confident with it. The board agreed to try it for the December board of education meeting and see how it goes.
Discussion without action: Student forum was hosted by National Honor Society members. Jack Jayne and Brittany Tennies presented an update on the group’s activities. The recent blood drive had a goal of 34 pints and 37 were donated. A Respite Day at Keuka Lake School is on their schedule and a canned food drive for the food pantry is planned for the week before Thanksgiving. Board member Irene Nowak, who works with the Dundee Food Pantry, told the students, “We appreciate what you are doing. It will be put to good use.”
• Board vice-president James Koehler and board member John Frederick outlined programs they attended during the New York State School Boards Association meeting in October.
• The board congratulated the 2008, Section V, Class D Championship DCS Scotsmen football team. Members Zeth Martz, Ryan Ballard, Steven Webb and Mike Raplee were recognized for special awards. The board also gave “High fives” to all of the fall athletes for their hard work and dedication.
• October Mega Scots Brett Bogart, MacKenzie Prior, C. Lou Marchionda and Emily Gilbert were congratulated during the meeting.

Appointments/Resignations: Appointed Stephanie Clevenger to teach in the Special Education area.
• Appointed volunteers for the Junior-Senior high school play and athletic programs.
Upcoming meetings: December 11 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be preceded by a Community Roundtable at 6 p.m. Both meetings will take place in the community meeting room.
