Chamber wants to create brochure for lake

HAMMONDSPORT—The Hammondsport Chamber of Commerce wants to capture the history of Keuka Lake in a project they are working on.
With the help from people in the community, the chamber is gathering information on the area’s past for a brochure or pamphlet.  Marybeth Hafner, with the Hammondsport Chamber, explained that until they have more information they will not know exactly they will present the pamphlet.  One option is to come out with a new volume every year, each for a different time line.
“I’ve encountered a large percentage of visitors that would like more historical info on the buildings in the area.  Many people inquire as to the specific types of architecture and what the original structures were used for back in their heyday,” said Hafner.
The current plans are to have a booklet pointing out places of interest for a walking or driving tour of Keuka Lake.  It will include photographs and stories submitted by area residents.
Hafner has already heard an interesting story about how Keuka Lake completely froze over once in the 1970s and a group of people cross country skied 70 miles of the lake.  She said that could be interesting if anyone ever asked about how much snow the area gets and if the lake freezes over.
The project will also give a way to present photos and locations of historic buildings torn down, like the Keuka Hotel.  It could also feature current places of interest that have made the area known.  Hafner gave Dr. Frank’s Vinifera Wine Cellars as an example because it was the first vinifera winery in the Finger Lakes.  She is also talking with the historical societies around the lake.
If any Keuka Lake area residents want to submit photos or stories of historical or regional significance, they may do so by mailing it to the Hammondsport Chamber, 47 Shethar St. Hammondsport, N.Y. 14840.  They may also be dropped off at the Chamber between Monday and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
John Jensen, president of the chamber of commerce said that if people wanted photos returned, the images can be scanned.  The chamber is also looking for people to volunteer to help on the pamphlet.  Interested people can call 607-569-2989.  Hafner said the next meeting does not have a date yet, but it may be in the evening at the end of February or beginning of March.  Meetings will be staggered and held at different times of the day to allow more people to attend.
