Track repaving will start next year
WATKINS GLEN--For the first time since 1998, Watkins Glen International (WGI) racetrack will undergo a repaving project in 2015. WGI President Michael Printup announced Wednesday, Nov. 5 the track repaving project will begin in the summer of 2015, starting with "The Boot" in July, with the rest of the track being completed following the NASCAR race in August. As a result of the repave, the U.S. Vintage Grand Prix will take place July 24 through 26, 2015. Senior Manager of Public and Community Relations Elizabeth Mayer said the Grand Prix's move to July is only temporary for 2015 to accommodate the repaving project. She said WGI expects the event to continue to attract competitors, but added it may affect the schedules of some spectators. "Watkins Glen International anticipates the event will continue to draw a breadth of Sportscar Vintage Racing Association competitors," Mayer said. "We know supporters of the event plan for the traditional September date and understand the change to a July date may affect their ability to attend." As for the annual Grand Prix Festival held in the village every September, Watkins Glen Promotions held a meeting Monday, Nov. 10 to address how the festival will proceed. Mayer added WGI will "continue to work with Watkins Glen Promotions to ensure both events are a success." The repave is slated for completion in advance of the 2016 race season. "This is a significant project for Watkins Glen International, our competitors, fans and track rental customers," Printup said. "The repave is a tremendous undertaking and next summer is the right time to begin this historic project and prepare The Glen for the future." Asphalt specialists and engineers conducted a thorough evaluation of The Glen's entire circuit and recommended the current timeline. Further details and project specifics will be released at a later date. Information regarding renewals and ticket sales will also be shared by WGI with customers in the coming weeks.
