Richard Thomas Weakland, 74, of Burdett passed away Dec. 2, 2024 at Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility. He was born June 2, 1950, the son of Vivian Wilson Peckens and Richard Thomas Weakland Sr. His birth father passed away when Rick was 2 years old and he was lovingly raised by his late adoptive father, Leroy “Pete” Peckens.
Rick is survived by the love of his life and wife of 45 years, Cindy Fadale Weakland; his two daughters Casey (Chris) Stephany of Burdett and Hallie Weakland of Denver, Colorado who were his pride and joy, his siblings Dan Weakland, Wendy (Leo) Kawczenski, Peter (Janet) Peckens, Melody (Greg) Freeman, many nieces and nephews, and close friends.
Rick grew up in Elmira and graduated from Southside High School in 1968. From there, he went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from Mansfield University and his masters in urban and regional planning from Florida Atlantic University. His storied career began as a Vista volunteer in Missouri and was filled with innumerable accomplishments. The stars aligned in 1978 when he started a position as executive director of the Warren-Forest Counties Economic Opportunity Council in Warren, Pennsylvania, the hometown of his soon-to-be bride, Cindy Fadale. Rick and Cindy married Aug. 11, 1979 and spent several happy years in Warren before relocating to the Finger Lakes in 1988 after Rick began working as president of Five Lakes Development Corporation in Watkins Glen. In 1994, his talents and strong work ethic landed him a position with Corning Enterprises/Corning Inc., where he took great pride in his work. Rick retired in 2013 as the director of corporate real estate and president of Corning Property Management Company after nearly 20 years. He and Cindy raised their family in Watkins Glen and Corning and Rick was dedicated to his community, particularly Seneca Lake and the surrounding areas.
In 2006, he and Cindy achieved their longtime goal of returning to spend their retirement on the shores of Lady Seneca. He spearheaded many economic revitalization efforts in the area over several decades, including heralding the return of the Grand Prix race re-enactment in 1993 and serving as chairperson of the festival for 13 years. In retirement, he led the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association and drove the completion of the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Watkins Glen.
He served on numerous boards throughout the region including the Schuyler Hospital and Cayuga Medical Center board of directors, Watkins Glen Promotions, Watkins-Montour Rotary Club and Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, among others. Rick made “work hard, play hard” a mantra and enjoyed many adventures with his wife, daughters, family and friends including sailing the Caribbean, lake days on Seneca, camping trips, and traveling to over 25 countries.
Rick was an incredible athlete throughout his life; upon retirement, he biked 3,667 miles over 50 days from Astoria, Oregon to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He continued biking into his 70s and rode his bike in eight countries making many great friends along the way.
His greatest joy in life was his family and he was immensely proud of his two daughters, who both reflect the very best of him. Rick was always ready with a witty one-liner and a warm hug and we will miss his kind spirit and sense of humor most of all.
Family and friends are invited to call at Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. Fourth St., Watkins Glen, Thursday, Dec. 12, from 3-6 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge of coins and rocks and different plants or anything, really. He was a prankster, and willing to try (almost) anything. Goofy, fun, loving, loyal. If you had the chance to spend time with him and really get to know him, you would see what an incredible human being he was.
Jeffrey leaves behind a legacy of love that will forever be held in the hearts of those who knew him. In memory, please plant a tree, be kind to one another, or donate to Mission22.com or a organization of one’s choice.
The family will receive friends and relatives at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. Fourth St., Watkins Glen Sunday, Dec. 8 from 12 to 1 p.m.; followed by a Service of Remembrance at 1 p.m.
Jeffrey was born Aug. 5, 1976. He was a loving son, brother, father, uncle and friend whose kindness and generosity touched many lives. He was predeceased by his father, Michael A. Yuhasz, and daughter, Ashley Redden, and sister Heather Yuhasz. He is survived by his mother, Carol Yuhasz; brother and sisters, Allison (Jake) Kolar of Germany, Kristie (Mike) Herrick of Elmira, Michael B. Yuhasz of Watkins Glen, twin sister, Jenny (Pete) Padilla of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Heidi Yuhasz of Elmira; son, Mihail Yuhasz of Dundee; grandson, Hunter; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, who will all hold his memory dear, especially his special niece, Emma.
Jeff was selfless in so many ways. He would give you the shirt off his back. He was a dedicated and hard worker and would take on any job, big or small. From planting seeds and nurturing plants, to fixing broken pipes and repairing homes. His passion for work was to make things better for everyone. He would reference movie lines in any conversation. He LOVED fireworks and anything that would go “boom,” as well as roller coasters and his family. He was smart! Obituaries/Memorial/Death Notices week of Nov. 27:
David Benjamin Boyd, 94, of Newtown, Pennsylvania was welcomed to eternal peace Nov. 21, 2024. He joins in Heaven his loving parents Benjamin Wakefield and Mary Helen O’Brien Boyd, his precious sister Mary Boyd Chabot, dear niece Marianne Chabot, dear nephew Edward Griffin, and many treasured aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws and friends. He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 73 plus years, Gloria; their three children, daughter Gloria Long and her husband Jim of Penn Yan, son David E. Boyd of Penn Yan and daughter Kathleen McDermott and her husband William of Newtown, Pennsylvania; his sister Barbara Boyd Griffin and sister-in-law Ida Fitzpatrick; 13 grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew, Brigit, Kelly, Tara, Kate, Grace, Jack, Ally, Sam, Michael, Rose and Brian; nine great-grandchildren, Christian, Sean, Isla, Thomas, Ruby, Turner, Mary, Regina and Vivian; as well as nieces, nephews and Godchildren.
Born in 1930 in Jersey City, New Jersey, David grew up in a large Irish Catholic family and forged lifelong friendships. He managed the challenges of a childhood during the Great Depression and WWII with faith, hard work and optimism. On Feb. 17, 1951, he married his high school sweetheart Gloria DelVecchio. Together they embraced the rich heritage mix of Irish and Italian cultures...“can’t beat the fun and the food of a great Gaelic and garlic family” was one of his favorite sayings. They built a strong and beautifully happy marriage centered around their close knit families and friends.
David had a successful career as a lead auto mechanic for Generator Exchange Company in Jersey City. He moved his growing young family from a city apartment to their first house in 1958. Living in Lyndhurst added to their circle of friends, while still enjoying Sunday dinners in Jersey City with their extended family almost every weekend.
Eventually his reputation was discovered by an executive of Ford Motor Company and in 1965 he accepted an offer that was strong enough to take him from his small Jersey City employer to the world of big business. His career with Ford took off immediately; as his winning combination of charm, expertise, good humor, and strong work ethic earned him awards and promotions. This new career path brought the family to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where they once again expanded their circle of lifelong friends. He and his wife enjoyed travel, volunteer work, vacations and eventually winters in St. Augustine, Florida.
He delighted in the arrival of each new grandchild and great-grandchild; taking them fishing, teaching them how to play the harmonica and the spoons, singing songs and celebrating all milestones with his wife and children. He took them on road trip adventures and there was always a summer vacation on the sandy beaches of New Jersey and then in waterfront cottages on Keuka Lake.
David was the personification of a truly good soul. He loved his family, his friends, and his life without reservation. Always a man with a generous and grateful heart, filled with a deep and sincere faith in God. The words “role model” aren’t quite strong enough to describe him. He was our North Star, guiding us as we grew, faced difficulties, celebrated joys and navigated our lives. A few years ago, we ran into one of his high school friends who said: “Everyone who knows him, loves him. No one has ever said a bad word against Davey Boyd. He walks with God.”
He was blessed with a lifetime of kindness, music, laughter and love. He will be missed beyond measure. We are filled with heartbreak and loss, as well as profound gratitude that he is in God’s loving embrace.
Family and friends are invited to visit Sunday, Dec. 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Joseph A. Fluehr Funeral Home, 800 Newtown-Richboro Road, Richboro, Pennsylvania and again Monday, Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 81 Swamp Road, Newtown, Pennsylvania. A funeral mass will follow directly. Internment will take place at Newtown Cemetery, Newtown, Pennsylvania. Memorials may be given to St. Michael School, 214 Keuka St., Penn Yan, NY 14527.
Never ending gratitude and love to Ana for her extraordinary care and kindness to David throughout his months in hospice.
