Happy Holidays! The Observer and the REVIEW&EXPRESS each published a combined holiday edition with the dates of Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2024 and Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2024. There is not a new paper for Dec. 25. The next new edition is Wednesday, Jan. 1.
The office is closed on Monday, Dec. 23 and will reopen Thursday, Jan 2.

Candidates file for school board election

TRI-COUNTY AREA—Five candidates will be vying for three seats on the Penn Yan Central School District board of education at the Tuesday, May 21, school election.
Incumbents Jeff Morehouse, Jeff Bray and Kathy Guenther are running for reelection to three year terms. David Willson and Phyllis Record are also running for the available seats. Meet the Candidate night will be held Monday, May 6 at 7 p.m. in the elementary school cafeteria. Residents will also be voting on the 2013-14 school budget. The polling location will be in the middle school gymnasium Tuesday, May 21 from noon to 8 p.m.
In Dundee, incumbents James Koehler, Paul Brown and Kristen VanValkenburg are running unopposed for three year terms. Meet the Candidates night will be held Tuesday, May 7 at 7 p.m. in the public meeting room. Residents will also be voting on the 2013-14 school budget. The polling location will be in the public meeting room Tuesday, May 21 from noon to 8 p.m.
Hammondsport has only one open position: Jim Zimar’s five year seat. Zimar will also be seeking reelection unopposed as no one else filed a petition. The budget hearing and Meet the Candidate night will be Tuesday, May 14, at 6 p.m. The Hammondsport vote will be held in the main campus lobby, 8272 Main St., May 21, noon to 8 p.m.

SCHUYLER COUNTY—Both the Watkins Glen and Odessa-Montour school boards will have multiple candidates  at the Tuesday, May 21, school election.
The final day to file petitions with the respective district offices was Monday, April 22. The Watkins Glen board has two open seats: Brian O’Donnell and Joseph Fazzary, both of whom are not seeking reelection. The district has received petitions from: Mark Franzese, Barbara Schimizzi, Heidi Pike, Kristin Hazlitt and Tom Lewis. The seats are for three years.
Odessa-Montour also has two open seats: those of Scott Westervelt and Chris Scata. Westervelt will seek reelection, while Scata will not. Three new candidates filed petitions to run: Robert Tuttle, Wendy Shutter, and Sharon Lewis. The open seats are also for three year terms.
Odessa has a budget hearing and Meet the Candidates night scheduled for Tuesday, May 7, at 7 p.m. Watkins’ public hearing is set for the same day, May 7, at 6:30 p.m. The Schuyler County League of Women Voters will host Watkins’ Meet the Candidates night, Tuesday, May 14, in the elementary auditorium, 7 to 9 p.m.
Residents will vote on board candidates and the 2013-14 school budget, May 21. Polls are open from noon to 8 p.m. The Watkins location is the district office, while Odessa-Montour residents will vote at the H.A. Hanlon school in Odessa. For a related story on Odessa’s budget, see page 4.
