Happy Holidays! The Observer and the REVIEW&EXPRESS each published a combined holiday edition with the dates of Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2024 and Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2024. There is not a new paper for Dec. 25. The next new edition is Wednesday, Jan. 1.
The office is closed on Monday, Dec. 23 and will reopen Thursday, Jan 2.

Master Gardeners announce 2009 program

PENN YAN—Spring really is on the way and Yates County Master Gardeners have completed plans for this year’s Yard ‘n Garden Day. The March 28 program in the Yates County auditorium will offer garden lovers three sessions of interest this year.
Paul Curtis, Associate Professor in the Department of Natural Resources and Wildlife Management at Cornell University will present a program related to controlling wildlife in home yards and gardens. Curtis is also Coordinator of Wildlife Damage Management Program for Cornell Cooperative Extension. His program will aid gardeners in both built up and rural areas cope with the bandits who invade properties throughout the county.
Don Cobb will focus on vegetables. A Seneca County Master Gardener, Cobb has been gardening for 50 years and will share his expertise with his audience. Although Yates County has a tremendous supply of roadside stands that offer outstanding produce, having a home garden provides exercise, very economical produce and the enjoyment of watching the fruits of garden labor ripen.
Nina Bassuk is Professor of Urban Horticulture at Cornell University. Her topic will be trees, from selection of appropriate species to and methods of ensuring success in raising transplanted trees as well as keeping mature trees healthy.
Yard ‘n Garden Day will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m. Programs will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m. Refreshments will be included in the $12 registration fee. More information and brochures are available by calling Cornell Cooperative Extension, Yates Association, at 315-536-5123.
