Mustangs win home opener 26-6

PENN YAN--The Penn Yan varsity football team won their home opener against Newark Friday, Sept. 11 with a score of 26-6.
The Mustangs kicked off to open the game, forcing a punt after giving up one first down. Penn Yan recovered a muffed punt at the Newark 48 yard line. The Mustangs drove to the Newark 10 yard line before stalling, turning the ball over on fourth down.
Two plays later, senior defensive back Austin Fingar intercepted a Newark pass, returning it to the Newark 20. However, a quarterback fumble recovered by Penn Yan ended up turning the ball over on fourth down at the Newark 25. The first quarter would end with a 0-0 tie.
The Newark offense was forced to punt following a brief drive, with Fingar returning the ball to the Penn Yan 43. A long rush by senior quarterback Tanner Irwin set up a touchdown rush by sophomore running back Dylan Stape. A failed two-point conversion attempt put the Mustangs ahead 6-0 early in the second quarter.
Penn Yan attempted an onside kick, but it was recovered by the Reds at their own 38 yard line. Newark drove into Mustang territory, resorting to a fake punt to convert on fourth and long. However, Penn Yan's defense held on another key fourth down to take over the ball on their own 19.
A quick three-and-out was followed by a punt, which was followed by a Newark punt. A long Stape screen pass reception within the last two minutes of the half was called back due to a holding penalty. A good punt pinned Newark back at their 6 yard like, so the Reds ran out the half with the score still 6-0, Penn Yan.
The Mustang offense came out of the gate strong with a 55-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Riley Marsh. A successful two-point conversion gave Penn Yan a 14-0 lead early in the third.
Newark started on their 19, scoring on a 70-yard rush to shorten the lead to 14-6. Senior wideout Sean Emerson returned the following kickoff to the Mustang 45, capping off their next offensive drive with a 30-yard Irwin touchdown run to go up 20-6.
Newark started their next drive at their own 21, driving into Penn Yan territory as the third quarter ended 20-6, Mustangs.
The Reds' drive stalled and they turned the ball over on downs at the Mustang 32. Penn Yan scored on their next offensive snap, with a 63-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Ru O'Malley to extend the lead to 26-6.
Newark drove the the Penn Yan 8 before turning the ball over on downs. The Mustangs ran out the clock to secure their victory at 26-6.
The Mustangs will go on to host Palmyra-Macedon Saturday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m.
