Penn Yan will perform 'Arsenic and Old Lace'

PENN YAN--The Penn Yan Academy Drama Club will be performing "Arsenic and Old Lace" this weekend, running from Friday, Nov. 14 to Sunday, Nov. 16. The show times are at 7 p.m. for the Friday and Saturday shows, along with a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday afternoon. All shows will take place at the Penn Yan Academy Auditorium.
"Arsenic and Old Lace" is a play by Joseph Kesserling that premiered in 1941. It is a dark comedy set in Brooklyn. The play was later adapted into a film in 1944, directed by Frank Capra.
The plot revolves around two aunts (portrayed by Mary Kate Killen and Abby Blauvelt) who have developed a homicidal hobby. As the aunts greet their guests, they coerce them into drinking their elderberry wine they have also laced with arsenic, strychnine and cyanide, poisoning them and burying their bodies within their basement. Their three nephews include Teddy (Patrick Gulick), who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt, drama critic Mortimer (Kevin Conrad) and Jonathan (Nick Kinsey). All three of the nephews come back home to visit their aunts and learn of their new poisonous ways. Once Mortimer discovers what his aunts have begun doing with their guests, he must decide what to do with his murderous family. Other characters include Mortimer's fiancée, who he is trying to decide whether or not to marry, and a crazy plastic surgeon, portrayed by Skylar Jensen and Reece Trombley respectively.
Tickets are $9 for adults and $8 for seniors and students.
